Recently, the Oriental Stork, renowned as the "national treasure of birds", reappeared at Songya Lake after an absence of 10 years. Meanwhile, the traces of the Scaly-sided Merganser, the "living fossil of birds", were once again observed and recorded by birdwatchers after a lapse of 5 years. Along with them were the swan flocks that arrive punctually every year, as well as the Siberian Crane, Yellow-browed Bunting, Yellow-throated Bunting, and Red-tailed Thrush.
The Oriental Stork and the Scaly-sided Merganser are large migratory birds. They are categorized as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and have both been incorporated into the list of China's first-class protected wild animals.
Experts from the Hunan Biodiversity Conservation Center stated that the Oriental Stork and the Scaly-sided Merganser are highly demanding in terms of their habitats, especially the water quality. Once the water area is contaminated, they will depart promptly. Such living habits have resulted in the sparse populations of the Oriental Stork and the Scaly-sided Merganser and have also led to their being regarded as typical ecological indicator species. The return of the Oriental Stork and the Scaly-sided Merganser this time has also infused new impetus into the biodiversity conservation efforts at Songya Lake.
