In Changsha's Kaifu District, three urban renewal projects show how a city can grow without erasing its past.

On Chaozong Street, a 6500-granite-block lane that was a grain trading hub in the Qing dynasty now hosts design studios, cafes, and 400 young entrepreneurs — preserved through "micro-renovation" rather than demolition.

Nearby, the provincial museum and Martyrs' Park had their separating wall removed to create a 29,000-square-meter plaza, allowing visitors to walk from park to museum in under a minute.

And under the Dongfeng Road overpass, a once-forgotten 9,000-square-meter space has been transformed into a sports park with basketball courts, badminton courts, and a children's playground — serving 30,000 nearby residents. The projects offer a glimpse into how Chinese cities are balancing heritage preservation, public space, and community needs.
