Caterpillars frighten some children. Mao Zhou, 43, wants to turn that fear into curiosity. In Changsha, China, he has turned roughly 330 square meters of his family’s yard into a butterfly breeding demonstration and training center, raising more than 10 species. From caterpillars feeding beneath leaves to butterflies preparing to emerge from chrysalises, it reveals transformations children may rarely notice.

Through more than 100 free science sessions, Mao has used photos, videos and specimens to introduce children to the butterfly’s life cycle: egg, caterpillar, chrysalis and adult. He has successfully raised over 50 species, supplied more than 1,000 specimens for classrooms and helped schools create miniature butterfly gardens. His hope is that understanding small insects will encourage children to care about the nature around them.
